About KellyBronze turkeys

The KellyBronze story started nearly 50 years ago in 1971 when Derek and Molly Kelly founded Kelly Turkeys – Derek the son of school teachers in Durham and Molly the daughter of a Yorkshire butcher and farmer.  The fledgling family business set out to produce great quality Christmas turkeys.  In time, the onslaught of the supermarkets saw the demise of the high street butcher and in 1983 saw the worst collapse in the turkey market in history and the family business was on a knife edge financially. 

We had to do something radical and engage with consumers and butchers directly which was when the KellyBronze idea was born. “Dad had a small collection of traditional turkeys that had by then become rare breeds and was impressed by the comments of a local butcher about the superior flavour of these bronze feathered birds. So in 1983 Dad scoured the country buying the last remaining flocks of pure bronze turkeys.”

The day arrived when Delia Smith, having heard about what we were doing, visited the farm in 1990 and listed us in her Christmas book. Finally, with a reasonable financial footing and generating profits, we could invest for the future and give more consumers the KellyBronze experience.

Today as the company approaches its 50th year we have grown from a staff of 11 to 90 in our seasonal peaks. We are still a small family business, and now with three generations involved.

There is no other company in the world that does what we do as we are in control of the whole farming process from pure line genetics right through to selling from the farm gate and our mainland UK home delivery service.

Bred to be Wild and Free

KellyBronze have the most mature turkeys in the country from our own unique bloodlines that are truly free-ranged to full maturity and live as nature intended.

We had bought to market turkey as it was at the start of the last century. A bronze, slow growing breed using our own unique bloodlines, hatched in the natural season and then grown to become the most mature turkey in the country.  The more mature the bird, the better the flavour!

They are grown through late spring, summer, autumn and into winter, with lots of exercise and a diet of locally grown corn, soya and foraging in fields and woodland.
